Creating sustainability, an achievable goal

Sustainability is a complex path for companies, since they must balance many different elements, but in Valtellina it’s possible: the local business world has the necessary foresight and creativity. Andrea Del Martino on behalf of Confcommercio emphasized this idea during the Forum for sustainable development, promoted by the Region: with a meeting in every province of Lombardy, the Forum is organised to meet stakeholders and discuss different topics correlated with sustainability. This year the project focused on circular economy, with a specific focus in Sondrio on projects serving sustainable tourism and sport.

“In Valtellina we’re able to build innovation and sustainability, we’ve demonstrated it in the past", Del Martino remarked, answering questions from Francesca Gambarini of Corriere della Sera. “This territory has been a model not only for Lombardy or at national level, but worldwide - Del Martino pointed out -. Think of 1902, when the railway line in Valtellina was the first to be electrified, with the Campovico hydroelectric power plant". The railway is not the only example, recalled Del Martino: "During the construction of the dams of Cancano and San Giacomo, materials were transported from Tirano to the area with the “filocarri”, heavy trucks powered by electricity".

It was a different time, he said, and today it’s difficult to plan for a longer term. "We live in an era of everything at once, at the lowest price you can get - remarked the representative of Confcommercio -. In the transport and logistics industry, being sustainable is a difficult challenge, since companies must balance the speed of delivery, the costs and the economic, social and environmental aspects. It’s complicated for companies, but creating sustainability projects is possible.”

For trade associations it’s vital to “be close to companies”, he stressed, to support their projects. "Confcommercio is committed together with companies - said Del Martino -, we must make sure that everyone gets involved in the ecological transition because we know it’s the right way forward, not because it’s this thing we have to do to keep up”.

In the last few years, attention and awareness have grown in the services sector: according to data compiled in 2023 by the Monitoring center on sustainability of Confcommercio Lombardia, 64% of entrepreneurs are familiar with ESG issues and 45% of respondents have modified their offer (or intend to do so in 2024) according to sustainability guidelines. 40% of the companies surveyed have carried out or would carry out an environmental impact check with the help of a professional.

During the Forum, Del Martino discussed the sustainability commitment of Maganetti as well, with the use of LNG for the whole fleet, the project to produce biomethane from a circular economy supply chain, the integration of the first electric truck. Del Martino also pointed out another important element to be taken into account when talking about sustainability in the logistics sector. "Customers have power - he said -, client companies can basically create logistic optimization. If companies bring to Valtellina fully loaded trucks that go back empty, or send out fully loaded trucks that come back empty, we’re doubling traffic and emissions. We must work together to create culture on this issue and improve organization".
